I couldn't stick with this setup for long but I had to take a photo before I scaled it back. The third display on the right was kinda hard on the neck, and two systems plus three LCDs generates a whole lot of heat in a very small office and summer is nearly here. (we hit 29 C here which is a good two if not three months ahead of schedule for Nova Scotia) I've now scaled back to just the two displays on the left hooked up to my desktop in a dual head configuration, and moved the workstation visible down to the basement.

I got to poking around the BIOS before moving the box downstairs looking for a way to power it up every morning at a set time, which is possible, but I saw something better called "Remote Wakeup" aka "wake on LAN" all over the web. Enabling it has the box keep the NIC powered to watch for a specially crafted packet, which when seen powers the machine on. From Linux I just had to run "ethtool -s eth0 wol g", and then shutdown or pm-hibernate normally. Waking it up from my office two stories up is as easy as "ether-wake MAC". Just saves me a trip down two flights of stairs so in my case it's more lazy than it is cool, but cool none the less.

Besides heads, I'm wondering how many hands do you have :)

Only two. :) But repetitive

Only two. :) But repetitive stress problems in one since I was a teenager. Taught myself to use a mouse with my left hand, works wonders.

Good thing the displays are

Good thing the displays are not wide, otherwise I would be jealous on your setup :p

It's scary how much we're alike. I did the same thing, setting it up just to see what it'd look like, before realizing the heat generated from all of those boxes in one room was causing a desert environment.

I then went the same route as moving my work desktop two floors down. It's plugged into a DVI port on my TV, but I never actually sit at it (there's no mouse or keyboard). Freaks out my non-geek friends to see just a computer there plugged in and running.

And lastly, I just recently started thinking about the whole wake on LAN thing, with the exact same disclaimer that while two flights of stairs isn't insurmountable, it's just cooler to be able to power it on from the office. :)

Nice setup. I like the comment about the Knuth book. lol
